Canpac International

Canpac International
Every year producing enough cans to stretch, end to end, from London to LA. Canpac is Fonterra’s largest secondary packager of milk powders. The Hamilton-based site is a global supplier of branded nutritional powders, bulk blended nutritional milk powders, and cans and can components. Canpac’s product blending facilities, sophisticated can printing and assembling machines, component presses, can filling lines and sachet packing machines see Fonterra products branded and exported to Australia, the Middle-East, the Americas, and North and South-east Asia.

Clandeboye

Clandeboye
Clandeboye is one of Fonterra’s seven South Island manufacturing sites, and the third largest of the 26 sites in New Zealand. Clandeboye processes 12.4 million litres of milk a day at peak (Fonterra in New Zealand processes over 70 million litres of milk per day at peak). Clandeboye is supplied by 865 farms through the Central South Island. The massive site has three driers producing milk powder, as well as a butter plant, two cheese plants that make cheddar varieties and Mozzarella, and a Whey processing facility.

Edendale

Edendale
Enough cheese for 10,800,000 crackers every manufacturing day of the year. Fonterra’s Edendale site has been manufacturing cheese for over 124 years, making it the New Zealand’s oldest site still in operation. Edendale’s four dryers (including ED4, the world’s largest dryer), convert milk into whole, skim and butter milk powders and the site’s casein plant produces mineral casein for the Japanese and North American markets. The Anhydrous Milk Fat (AMF) plant exports product for use in consumer foods around the world.

Edgecumbe

Edgecumbe
Exporting milk products to 53 countries around the world. Many of Edgecumbe’s products wouldn’t typically be associated with the dairy industry, yet the site’s specialised milk treatment facilities process protein products for use in sports drinks, protein bars, soups and baby foods, whey products for use in sports nutritional supplements, and ethanol for alcoholic beverages. The site also boasts one of New Zealand’s two fractionation plants, which is used in the treatment of cream and the manufacture of specialty cream products such as butter. Casein, Lactose concentrate, Anhydrous Milk Fat and AMF products blended with vegetable oil are also produced at Edgecumbe.

Eltham

Eltham
Cheese from Fonterra’s New Zealand primary processing sites is cut, grated, shredded and packaged for consumers around the world, including fast food chains Pizza Hut, Dominos, and McDonald’s. Eltham is also home to one of Fonterra’s speciality cheese operations, which produces cheeses such as blue vein, camembert and brie for the local and international markets.

Hautapu

Hautapu
Manufacturing enough blocks of cheese every year to stretch from New Zealand to Australia and back again. A variety of specialty cheeses, including Edam, Gouda and award-winning Egmont and Cheddar products are manufactured by Fonterra Hautapu. The site also specialises in lactose, casein, milk protein and whey protein products, all of which are destined for markets in Europe and the United States. Innovative packing technology sees all of Hautapu’s dry products packed on site and ready for export.

Kaikoura

Kaikoura
Manufacturing enough blocks of cheese every year to reach the height of Mt Everest 6 times. Kaikoura cheese fills burgers and tops pizzas at fast food restaurants around New Zealand. The site’s coloured and uncoloured cheddar products are also exported to Japan, the USA, Australia and Europe for direct consumer use and as an ingredient in the manufacture of other consumer products.

Kapuni

Kapuni
Making enough pharmaceutical grade lactose for around 72 billion tablets each year. Kapuni is home to one of Fonterra’s four lactose plants and is the only site with a refinery, which produces refined-grade lactose for Fonterra’s Ingredients business. Kapuni also produces pharmaceutical grade lactose for DMV-Fonterra Excipients, for use in the manufacture of pharmaceutical tablets, capsules and vaccines. A small quantity of the site’s dry lactose is also further processed into inhalation grade lactose for use in asthma inhalers.

Kauri

Kauri
Buttering 15 million pieces of toast every day. Fonterra’s site at Kauri is home to the only fractionation plant in New Zealand. The plant takes concentrated milkfat and cleverly splits out the Low and High melting fractions to be reformulated into butter which is spreadable straight from the fridge. Kauri also produces skimmilk, wholemilk and nutritional powders for use in chocolates, milk reconstitutions and a variety of other foods. The site’s Concentrated Milk Fat is exported to America, Europe, Australia and the Middle East.

Lichfield

Lichfield
Manufacturing enough blocks of cheese to fill three rugby fields every week. Cheese produced at Lichfield has an international flavour, with the site’s brine and dry salt products destined for markets in Japan, America, Latin America Europe and Australia. Fonterra Lichfield also helps to fuel our babies and sportspeople, producing whey protein concentrate and isolates for use in infant formulas and energy drinks.

Longburn

Longburn
The Longburn Site plays a pivotal role for the Lower North Island region in two main areas. Firstly, the collection of milk for transportation by road and rail to Whareroa, and secondly, the production of Mineral Acid Casein over the peak milk season for general trade use.

Maungaturoto

Maungaturoto
With an origin dating back to 1902, Maungaturoto site continues to receive milk from 110,000 cows every day. Maungaturoto produces Whole Milk Powder for the South American market. The majority of the Casein produced on site is used in processed cheese production, with the site’s whey powder used in the production of Fonterra Brands products as a source of protein, nutritional powders, beverages and cultured products (yoghurt). Maungaturoto exports its powders to five continents around the world.

Morrinsville

Enough cream each day to top 1.2 million pavlovas Every day Fonterra’s Morrinsville site churns cream into enough butter for around 7 million pieces of toast. The site’s daily delivery of 50 tankers of milk is also used to produce whole and skim milk powder, some of which is used in the manufacture of Stolle milk.

Pahiatua

Pahiatua
Six million glasses of milk every day. Pahiatua’s two milk powder plants process whole milk for use as an ingredient in a range of consumer products, including confectionery. Chances are if you are eating some of New Zealand’s most well-known chocolate brands it contains top quality dairy ingredients from Fonterra.

Plains

Plains
Every week manufacturing milk powder equivalent in weight to 25 African bull elephants. Located in Christchurch, Fonterra’s Plains plant specialises in producing buttermilk and skim milk powders.

Reporoa

Reporoa
Processing enough milk for 8.8 million cappuccinos every day. Food-grade ethanol for use in the manufacture of consumer food products and alcoholic beverages is just one of the products manufactured in the specialised milk treatment and processing facilities at Fonterra’s forty-year-old Reporoa site. The site also uses skim milk to produce a range of protein products, such as caseinate for nutritional supplements and lactalbumin.

Stirling

Producing cheese for 2.5 million scones every hour. Impressive continuous cheese making technology ensures Fonterra’s twenty-nine-year-old Stirling site produces enough normal & reduced salt cheeses, such as Cheddar and Colby, to supply the Australian, EU, Middle Eastern, Central American, Asian and domestic markets. The site also produces whey protein concentrate for use in nutritional supplements, baby foods and sports drinks and lactose concentrate which is sent to other sites to be processed into sugar.

Takaka Brightwater

Turning out enough milk powder each year to fill 16 Olympic swimming pools Located right at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, Fonterra’s Takaka and Brightwater sites have been operating for over 100 years. The two sites produce skim milk powder, whole milk powder and whole milk concentrates for use in sweetened condensed milk, reconstituted milk, ice cream and other consumer dairy products.

Te Awamutu

Te Awamutu
Every year enough bags of milk powder to stretch the length of New Zealand three times. Te Awamutu’s whole, skim and butter milk dryers produce a range of instant, regular, vitamin fortified and nutritional powders. The site’s cream treatment technology produces salted and unsalted butter products for markets around the world. A sophisticated Anhydrous Milk Fat plant also produces sweet cream, whey cream and colostrum AMF for use in the reconstitution of milk and the manufacture of spreads, chocolate, ice cream and baking.

Te Rapa

Te Rapa
Cream cheese for 76,000 cheesecakes, every day. With its impressive drying capabilities, Fonterra’s Te Rapa site produces nearly 20 per cent of the company’s whole and skim milk powders. The site also turns its daily quota of 304 tanker loads of milk into a range of cream products, such as butter, cream cheese and Anhydrous Milk Fat.

Te Roto

Our Te Roto site on the Kapiti Coast is a supplier of speciality cheese, such as creamy blue, brie and parmesan.

Tirau

Tirau
Receiving milk from cows equivalent in numbers to the population of New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington. Adhesives, textile fibers, paper coatings, leather finishing and paints are just some of the end-product uses for ‘technical’ casein processed at Fonterra’s Tirau site. The site’s acid casein is also used in the manufacture of a range of food products, including infant formulas, coffee whiteners, confectionary and cereals. Tirau lactalbumin is used in pharmaceutical applications, health foods and infant formula, and the site’s ethanol is used in a range of household items, including perfumes and deodorants.

Tuamarina

Tuamarina
Our plant at Tuamarina in Marlborough removes water from milk before transporting it to our Clandeboye site, also in the South Island. The environmentally sound technology means lower volumes of milk to transport and fewer trucks on the road between Marlborough and South Canterbury.

Waitoa

Nutritional products, such as infant formula and dietary supplements, along with standard skim and whole milk powders are produced in the four dryers at Fonterra’s Waitoa site.

Whareroa

Whareroa
Every year making Mozzarella for around 7.8 million pizzas. Fonterra Whareroa is Fonterra’s second largest manufacturing plant in New Zealand. The site’s five dryers convert milk into instant whole, skim and butter milk powders. Whareroa’s two cheese plants supply supermarkets and food outlets with cheeses such as Cheddar, Colby, Egmont and Mozzarella. The site is also home to New Zealand’s largest butter plant, which churns enough butter each week to fill nearly three rugby fields with its 500g blocks.
