Who We Support
Our sponsorship programme allows us to actively demonstrate our commitment to local communities. We want to get involved in the communities we operate in, and enhance them through causes that matter to them and to us. These community partnerships are chosen to align with what Fonterra stands for.
Fonterra will succeed through generations because we are committed to sustainable dairying and to the communities where we live and work…

Fonterra Science Roadshow
December 2008 research showed that New Zealand primary school children’s science achievement has declined in recent years. Science, technology and innovation are fundamental to Fonterra’s business and we are proud to be inspiring the future technologist, scientists and engineers with our sponsorship of the Fonterra Science Roadshow.
Every year, the Roadshow travels to schools all over New Zealand reaching 45,000 children aged 8-13 years old who get the opportunity to explore science principles through an exciting collection of hands-on exhibits and science demonstrations.
Since it began in 1988, over 1.2 million children have participated in the Roadshow programme. For more information about the Fonterra Science Roadshow go to: www.roadshow.org

Catchment Care
We are dedicated to looking after the environment so that the things we enjoy today are preserved for the generations of tomorrow. Fonterra works in partnership with the dairy industry, local government, Government and our farmers to promote sustainable on-farm management and minimise the impact dairying has on the environment.
Catchment Care is part of these commitments to increase vegetation cover alongside streams and improve water quality by intercepting nutrient and sediment flows into streams, remove invasive species that may choke sub-catchments and reinvigorate wetlands.
Fonterra together with Conservation Volunteers, will coordinate and support community groups, shareholders, employees, regional councils, employment groups, schools and nursery groups to deliver practical water catchment care projects across New Zealand.
Indicative outputs for FY10:
- 20 kilometres of wetland and riparian areas fenced
- 102,000 stems planted in catchment zones
- 100,000 sq. metres of area planted
- 100,000 sq. metres of catchment cleared of exotic weed species
- 100,000 sq. metres of planting maintained
We anticipate the overall area improved through Catchment Care will be over 1,000,000 sq. metres.
NZ Community Site Relations Programme
We recognise the important role that our local communities play in helping Fonterra and to show our support we assist community groups and schools in projects such as providing worm farms and recycling facilities to local schools, donating seedlings and staff time to riparian planting programmes, sponsoring regional science fairs and sponsoring or donating product for rural events such as calf club days.
We welcome applications for sponsorship activity that have a close association with the dairy industry and Fonterra, particularly in the following four key areas:
Environment – activities that add value to the dairy industry at a grassroots level, and ensure that dairy is a sustainable, profitable industry for the long-term. Potential sponsorship activities include landscaping/developing/cleaning a local park, recycling programmes, supporting school environmental initiatives and riparian planting.
Education – initiatives that help to promote innovation in dairy, build technical expertise and encourage young people to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and/or the dairy industry, such as school science awards and pastoral days (calf club).
Emergency Response – activities that support the operation of local emergency response teams, such as the Volunteer Fire Service, Civil Defence and Search and Rescue.
Nutrition & Wellbeing – initiatives that support healthy, active lifestyles through the goodness of dairy such as product donations or branded merchandise to support local teams. This also includes any initiative that aims to take care of community wellbeing, through supporting local H&S initiatives such as high visibility safety vests and helmets for children.
We also support the future of New Zealand dairy industry. We currently sponsor:
- New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards
- National Fieldays
- Regional Fieldays
- Maori Farmer of the Year
- Large Herds Conference
- Dairy3 Conference
- South Island Dairy Event
- ASB Agribusiness Conference
- Calf Club Days

Supporting Communities Around The World
Fonterra Brands Lanka
Community projects focus on education and nutrition in the local community. Fonterra has over 25 years of history in Sri Lanka and has been a neighbour to several local schools for over 12 years.
Fonterra Brand Lanka has helped create a healthier and safer learning environment through providing construction of a 750 square foot building to house extracurricular activities; a refurbishment of the school’s main hall; renovation of the ablution blocks and entrance to the school; and the construction of a secure boundary fence and a new drinking water pipe delivering a secure water supply for the 2400 children.
Fonterra Brands Lanka Managing Director, Achyut Reddy, said “Education is the building block of every community. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and we therefore see this project as an investment in the next generation of leaders for our community.”
Fonterra Rural Maternity and Infant Healthcare programme China
Fonterra, in partnership with the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, formally signed an agreement in April 2009 to develop a “Rural Maternity and Infant Healthcare” programme focused on supporting the health of mothers and infants from the less developed areas of China.
Fonterra donated USD5 million to the Foundation to fund this programme, starting with Hebei province in 2009..
The programme seeks to:
· establish a maternity and infant healthcare hub in the community
· provide tools and resources to support prenatal and postnatal care
· provide information on maternal and infant healthcare and provide training to medical workers in rural communities
For the past 27 years, the Soong Ching Ling Foundation has made notable achievements in the areas of culture, education, health and science and technology. This latest partnership with Fonterra will further aid China in her social development, and promote the importance of maternal and infant health in the less developed regions of China..
